Removable vs. Permanent Wall Graphics: How to Choose

Corner storefront window graphics installation

One of the first decisions in any wall graphics project is how long the graphic needs to last. The answer changes which film makes sense.

Removable wall graphics

Removable films are designed to come off without damaging the wall when the time comes.

Good for: - Leased spaces - Seasonal or promotional graphics - Retail that changes often - Brands that expect to update their look - Record walls that will change

Long-term wall graphics

Longer-term films bond more aggressively and are meant to stay up for years.

Good for: - Lobby logo walls - School and athletic walls - Murals meant to last - High-traffic areas, often with a protective laminate

Questions that decide it

  1. How long will it stay up? Months or years?
  2. Do you own or lease? Leases often require walls to be returned to their original condition.
  3. Will the content change? Rosters, records, promotions, and rebrands all change.
  4. What's the surface? Some surfaces work better with certain films.
  5. How much wear will it get? Hallways, gyms, and restaurants may need laminate.

A note on removal

How cleanly any graphic comes off depends on the film, the paint underneath, and how long it has been up. Choosing the right film at the start is the best way to avoid problems later.
