Locker Room Wall Graphics: A Planning Guide for Athletic Directors
A locker room says a lot about a program. When athletes walk in and see their colors, their logo, and their history on the walls, it sets the tone before practice even starts.
If you're planning a locker room, gym, or weight room makeover, here's how to approach it.
Step 1: Decide which walls matter most
Start with the walls athletes and visitors see most:
- Locker room feature wall: the first wall players see when they walk in
- Gym walls: mascot murals and banner-style graphics for home games
- Weight room: program branding and motivational walls
- Hallways and entrances: spirit walls for students, families, and visiting teams
- Record and championship walls: program history
You don't have to do everything at once. Many programs start with one high-impact wall and add more over time.
Step 2: Gather your artwork
You'll need your logos, mascot, school colors, and any photos you want to use. If your artwork is low resolution or only exists as a small image, it may need to be rebuilt for large-format printing.
Step 3: Plan record walls for updates
Records get broken and championships get won. Lay out record walls so new names, years, and titles can be added later without replacing the entire wall.
Step 4: Check the surface
Most school locker rooms and gyms are painted concrete block. Block can be wrapped, but it needs the right film and install method. Recently painted walls also need time to fully cure.
A site visit before anything is printed catches surface problems early.
Step 5: Schedule around the calendar
Installs go smoothest when they're planned with your facilities team, such as during breaks, weekends, or times the space isn't in use. Work backward from your target date to leave room for design, proof approval, and production.
Step 6: Line up funding and approvals
Wall projects are often funded through athletic budgets, boosters, parent groups, or sponsors. Check what approvals your district needs before the project starts, especially for public school buildings.
Step 7: Approve a proof
Before production, you should see a proof sized to the actual wall. Check spelling, colors, logo placement, and where panel seams will fall.

Many athletic graphics companies ship a roll of vinyl and leave installation to your maintenance staff. A local installer measures the wall, checks the surface, installs the graphic, and walks the finished wall with you.
